The process in detail

Minimum age and exam dates

You must be at least 15 ½ years old. You can take your theory exam 3 months before your 16th birthday and your practical exam 1 month before.

Application at the road traffic office

The application always comes first! Make sure all the details are correct. Based on your application, the road traffic office (Straßenverkehrsamt) prints your driving licence and commissions TÜV to conduct your exams. This can take a few weeks – but that is the road traffic office's responsibility. While your application is being processed, you can of course already start your training and attend our theory lessons.

  • First-aid certificate (9 teaching units)
  • Eye test
  • 1 biometric passport photo
  • Valid ID document
  • Application form

Theory

If you don't have a driving licence yet, 16 theory lessons of 90 minutes each are mandatory: 12 basic topics and 4 class-specific topics that deal specifically with motorcycling. If you already hold a licence class, the basic lessons are reduced from 12 to 6.

Practice and special drives

Our riding lessons last 40 minutes, and we always book them as double lessons. How many driving lessons you need depends very much on your individual learning progress. On top of that comes a mandatory number of special drives. As soon as you feel ready, it's time for the practical exam.

  • 5 rural road drives
  • 4 motorway drives
  • 3 training lessons at dusk

What can I ride with class A1?

You may ride motorcycles with an engine capacity of at most 125 cc and an output of at most 11 kW (15 hp); the power-to-weight ratio may be at most 0.1 kW/kg. In addition, you may drive three-wheeled motor vehicles with an engine capacity over 50 cc or a maximum speed over 45 km/h; here the output is limited to 15 kW.

What does moving up a class mean?

Class A1 is the first level of the motorcycle licences: A1 is followed by A2, and then A. There must be 2 years of riding experience between each class. After that, to move up to the next class you only need a few driving lessons and a practical exam – no new theory exam and no special drives. The idea behind it: you increase the motorcycle's power step by step instead of starting straight away on the biggest possible machine.

Bike to Bike

We always train our students from the motorcycle – every one of our driving instructors is a passionate motorcyclist. You ride behind your driving instructor and get all the tips and tricks shown to you directly.

How much does the class A1 licence cost?

The fixed costs are set – including the legally required special drives. How many practice lessons you need beyond those depends on you.
