The process in detail
Minimum age and exam dates
You must be at least 14 ½ years old. You can take your theory exam 3 months before your 15th birthday.
Application at the road traffic office
The application always comes first! Make sure all the details are correct. Based on your application, the road traffic office (Straßenverkehrsamt) prints your driving licence and commissions TÜV to conduct your exams. This can take a few weeks – but that is the road traffic office's responsibility. While your application is being processed, you can of course already start your training and attend our theory lessons.
- First-aid certificate (9 teaching units)
- Eye test
- 1 biometric passport photo
- Valid ID document
- Application form
Theory
In your theoretical training you get familiar with road traffic: with the basics of driving and the traffic rules. It's important that you've attended at least 12 basic topics to be admitted to the theory exam. If you already hold a driving licence, the number drops from 12 to 6 double lessons. In addition to the basic lessons, there are two double lessons covering the class-specific content for class A.
Practice and exam
In the practical driving lessons you get familiar with all the rules and your vehicle in real traffic. Unlike other licence classes, there are no legally required special drives in this class. The number of driving lessons depends heavily on your abilities. A driving lesson with us lasts 40 minutes; we always schedule a double lesson. You take the practical exam with a TÜV examiner; it usually lasts 55 minutes.
What can I drive with class AM?

- Three-wheeled mopeds (trikes): the same maximum speed and engine capacity as mopeds, at most two seats, weight at most 350 kg.
- Light quadricycles (quads): maximum speed and engine capacity as for trikes, unladen weight at most 350 kg.
