Documents for the road traffic office: which papers you need

Which documents you submit to the road traffic office for each licence class – and why you shouldn't put it off.

The documents for the road traffic office (Straßenverkehrsamt) are one of the most important steps in your driving licence training. As long as your documents haven't been submitted, your driving licence won't be printed and there's no exam order – which means you can't take an exam yet. You can still start your training with us, but missing papers often slow it down unexpectedly.

Don't worry: we help you with all the little details and take your documents to the road traffic office as soon as they're complete. What exactly you need depends on your licence class.

Let's be clear from the start: the waiting time is immense – and it varies from city to city. Processing currently usually takes between 3 and 10 weeks.

Car and motorcycle classes (for example class B): certificate of the first-aid course (9 teaching units), biometric passport photo, eye test, valid ID card or passport and the fee.

Accompanied driving (B17): the same documents, plus a copy of the driving licence of each accompanying person, a copy of the ID documents of your legal guardians, a declaration of consent from each accompanying person and a declaration of consent from your legal guardians.

Truck classes C, C1, CE and C1E: certificate of the first-aid course (9 teaching units), biometric passport photo, valid ID card or passport, a medical certificate of fitness (not more than one year old) from a doctor of your choice, an ophthalmological report and the fee.

Bus classes: the same documents as for the truck classes; for class D1, an official certificate of good conduct is also required (apply for it at the residents' registration office or citizens' centre).
