Become a driving instructor

To become a driving instructor, you need to meet a few requirements. Here we explain what they are and how the training works. To start, we arrange a no-obligation get-to-know-you meeting: we explain everything calmly, answer your questions and show you how the training would work.

  1. 01

    Requirements

In principle, anyone aged 21 or over who has completed vocational training can train as a driving instructor. You need a spotless certificate of good conduct (Führungszeugnis) and should pass the medical examinations. You also need to have held a car driving licence for at least 3 years, as well as the class BE trailer licence – how long you've held that one doesn't matter.

  2. 02

    Training phase 1

In this phase you attend a driving instructor college (Fahrlehrerfachschule), which we choose together with you. There you complete 8 months of basic training: you learn everything about driving school teaching methods, traffic behaviour and road traffic regulations, plus basic general legal knowledge and the fundamentals of vehicle technology. At the end of this phase, specialist knowledge exams and a practical driving exam await you.

  3. 03

    Training phase 2

After that you receive a probationary driving instructor licence for two years. With it, you complete your internship at one of our branches, going through our online academy and mentoring programme. You learn how to train students in theory and practice – and with your mentor you always have someone to turn to in difficult situations.

  4. 04

    Funding

You don't need to worry about funding for now. If you want to become a driving instructor, we'll find a way to fund it together. Which support suits your situation is something we'll work out as soon as we get to know each other in person.

Reasons to become a driving instructor

  • Vehicles

Every driving instructor is provided with a premium vehicle – private use is allowed. You also get a free fuel card.

  • Pay

A driving instructor's salary is one of the highest among the further-training professions. You can also continue your training with us and take on responsibility, so your salary can grow too.

  • Flexible hours

As a driving instructor you plan your own hours and decide whether you work a 5- or 6-day week. You conveniently arrange your appointments with your students via our online calendar.
