The process in detail

Minimum age and exam dates

The same age limits apply as for Class B: theory exam at the earliest 3 months and practical exam at the earliest 1 month before your 18th birthday – with accompanied driving (B17) one year earlier.

Application at the road traffic office

The application always comes first! Make sure all the details are correct. Based on your application, the road traffic office (Straßenverkehrsamt) prints your driving licence and commissions TÜV to conduct your exams. This can take a few weeks – but that is the road traffic office's responsibility. While your application is being processed, you can of course already start your training and attend our theory lessons.

  • First-aid certificate (9 teaching units)
  • Eye test
  • 1 biometric passport photo
  • Valid ID document
  • Application form

How B197 works

Theory and special drives are the same as for Class B. You take your practical exam in an automatic car. In addition, you complete at least 10 driving lessons of 45 minutes in a manual car with us and a test drive of at least 15 minutes. We then issue you a certificate – with code number 197 on your licence you may also drive manual cars.
