Code number added to your Class B licence, not a separate licence: it lets you drive a towing vehicle with a trailer over 750 kg if the permissible total mass of the combination is over 3,500 kg and no more than 4,250 kg – for example with a caravan or horse trailer. Training without an exam.

The process in detail

What's the difference between B96 and BE?

Code 96 (B96) is intended as a quick and easy extension, class BE for everyone who wants to do it completely and thoroughly. The choice depends on what you need it for: with B96 you may drive a combination with a maximum authorised mass of up to 4,250 kg, with class BE up to 7,000 kg. These figures are only relevant if the trailer has a maximum authorised mass of more than 750 kg. If it's below that, you may also tow the trailer with class B – even if the combination exceeds 3,500 kg.

How the training works

For class B96 you don't need to take another theory exam, but you do complete 2.5 hours of theory lessons. There are no special drives, because B96 is merely a code added to your driving licence. You complete 4.5 hours of practical driving experience and then receive a training certificate from us. With it, you apply for the code at the road traffic office – without a further exam and without a separate application beforehand.
