The practical exam: process and waiting time

On the waiting list after 5 rural road drives, around 6–8 weeks' wait at TÜV Nord and 2–3 double lessons of preparation – here's how you get to your practical exam.

The practical exam is the final step of your driving licence training. The training leading up to it follows a firm structure with us: we work to a fixed training plan with fixed content, all of which you'll find in your training logbook (Ausbildungsbegleiter).

It's important that you've worked through all the learning content with your driving instructor – there should be a tick next to “Good” everywhere. Whether and when you're ready for the exam is something you agree on with your driving instructor based on your training logbook.

As soon as you've done 5 rural road drives, you're put on the waiting list for the practical exam. Unfortunately, TÜV Nord is struggling to provide exams for the sheer number of students – which is why we wait about 6–8 weeks for your exam slot.

While you're waiting, you continue the remaining special drives at your usual pace. As soon as the date for your practical exam is fixed, your driving instructor gets in touch with you and you discuss the final preparatory driving lessons together. Usually 2–3 double lessons of 80 minutes each await you at this stage.

You can prepare for the typical tricky spots with the “DriversCam” app, which is also linked in your “FahrenLernen Max” app. We've filmed many spots that may come up in your exam. But please don't just memorise them – try to understand where the difficulties lie.

For the practical exam you basically only need to bring your ID card and, if you need vision aids, your glasses or contact lenses. We automatically file the proof that you've completed all special drives digitally in the TÜV portal.
